Eating and drinking in Mexico |
Want to get a real, piquant taste of Mexico? Travel Mexico and go to a Mexican restaurant! Mexican cuisine has Spanish, Indian and some other nations' roots. It is rich in vitamins, protein, fiber etc. because of corn, beans, cheese, tomato salsa, etc. In Mexico you will find menus full of many dish and beverage names. Some dishes are well-known, some are rare, so your tummies aren't used to them. Some are heavily fried with fat, some are cheese capped, etc. But you will enjoy the food if knowing what to pick up. You will be offered tortillas, frijoles, desayuno, sopa seca, sopa a guada, salsa cruda, many various chile seasonings, mole poblano etc. It's especially worth while trying Grilled fish or chicken breast, Salad with Taco, Chicken Taco or even Dessert Taco. The dishes are proved delicious. If you are a vegetarian, surely you will adore Mexican cuisine, because here you will find a plenty of various vegetable soups, dishes with rice and salads.
To be on the safe side, follow some tips:
- in top class restaurants you may eat whatever you want!
- in other places you'd better choose only just cooked dishes;
- avoid salads and any uncooked vegetables, nobody knows with what water they were washed, if were;
- find favourite restaurants of locals, the safe sign, or even Vendors, or Kiosks, - but be exceedingly careful;
- see food preparing, yeah? Go ahead;
- drink only specially provided water, have some bottle water about you. Say no to tap water, even for teeth cleaning. An interesting fact: according to the Mexican laws only purified water can be used for ice;
- wash, soak vegetables, fruits (there are a great variety, take care and be fit). Then some can be peeled, boiled.
Drinking goes along with eating, so what and how should be tasted? Soft drinks are rather numerous in Mexico. There are traditional Coke, Pepsi, but you as well can taste Sidral with apple flavour, lemonade, fresh extracted juices are available of any fruits. You can be served rich aroma coffee, espresso and cappuccino, hot chocolate or camomile, Melissa tea, by the way Mexico is well-known for its best coffee-houses. But don't forget of alcohol drinks, there are plenty more. Beer of Mexico (cerveza) (if a receipt is saved and beer is drunk, go to the same store and get 30% of your purchase), red or white wines, and of course cactus drinks: Tequila with salt and lime, mescal, pulque, rum, gin, definitely in Mexico there is something to take a sip or gulp of. Mexican cops are patient to slightly drunk tourists, but until they weave or stagger. Do bear in mind that the legal drinking age is 18.
To tell the truth you'd better not eat much at first, your tummy needs adjustment. Take a time and enjoy yourself! Though too much tequila can be the main problem!
